Stevie Ray Vaughan 1954-1990

Yesterday marked the 17th anniversary of SRV's tragic death in a helicopter accident. I thought it fitting to pay homage to his music. As a drummer, you'd think my music icon would be Neil Peart or Bonzo or Keith Moon. While I do appreciate their talents, I've never seen a live performance anything close to the show that SRV put on when I saw him in Austin in 1989. (Yes, I am THAT old.)

The below video is almost 10 minutes long, but well worth it in my opinion. If you just can't take the time, fast forward to about the 7 minute mark for the last 3 minutes until the end. You'll see all you need to see to appreciate the innate, raw talent of the best slinger (That's SLINGER, not singer. He was not known for his vocals!) that ever lived. He's been gone 17 years as of yesterday, and I've seen this 100 times, but it still makes the hair on my neck stand up, as he plays from behind his back without missing a single note.

It's a Jimi Hendrix classic that's done with Stevie's distinct flair, and a great tribute to his own guitar hero, Jimi. Again, if you don't want to spend the full 6 minutes, fast forward to about 2 minutes in (about 4:15 remaining) for some incredible one-handed fret work.

I don't watch a lot of television or typically answer the QOTD; I've never seen The View and I don't know the first thing (or care) about her feud with The Donald or Elizabeth-whats-her-face, but I think I speak for heterosexuals everywhere when I say: "How about a....

Can you believe that she had the balls to say.... "I've been hanging around with those heteros for a full year and it's not fun. Turn around one minute and they'll stab you in the back with a high heel. They will."

God, please make Rosie O'Donnell go away. I don't want to do her any harm, just make her go away! Please??!!! And, the one or two days a year that I am actually sick enough to not make it into the office, I sooooo look forward to watching the Price Is Right at 11am from the comfort of my sickbed. Did you really have to replace Bob Barker with THIS?

I feel like crap as it is....

funny side anecdote: I have a buddy who claims to have slept with her waaaaay back in her stand up comedy days in Miami. I make no comment as to its validity, but I tend to believe him. Needless to say, he did not hold his bedmates to the standards that most people do......Eeeesh!

Today (yes, today) was Flag Day

and nobody gives a shit. OK, so it's not the kind of day where we typically attend a ceremony or service or even a family cookout. But, it represents a significant piece of our history as Americans. Did YOU even know it was Flag Day today? Probably not, and that's ok. I'm not so pretentious as to judge you or your character just because you don't have red and blue on today. Are any of your friends or colleagues wearing something symbolizing Flag Day....something as simple and innocuous as a flag pin or flag tie? No, its not likely. Why? Because its (sadly) become unacceptable to be proud to be American. We're so concerned that someone will think we support the war in Iraq or we support the boob in the White House. Remember the split second we all felt patriotic shortly after 9/11? We were all as one---all Americans---standing tall and united in support of each other. For a handful of days, we didn't notice race or religion, state or regionality. There were no political party divisions, no lines drawn in the sand overseas, no colors seen except red, white and blue.

Flag

Yeah, I've seen the "ugly American" episode overseas.....It's been repeated again and again in London, Paris, Istanbul, Bagdhad, Tokyo, Rome, Moscow and any every other city away from US soil. I've been embarassed to be American more frequently than most of you. Is that any reason to forget, or, worse yet, purposely ignore or deny our heritage???

Yes, perhaps I'm a bit corny....wearing a Ralph Lauren flag tie today. Maybe I'm a bit more sensitive to the issue than your average American. Maybe I care because I'm a former military guy, happy and thankful to be living here in America, and grateful for the sacrifices of my brothers and fathers and sisters. I'm willing to accept all of those labels. For those of you that view me as a war monger or a crazy, blind American zealot because I still love our country despite its (admittedly) many flaws, eff you. If you're not thankful for the freedoms afforded you, the sacrifices that have been made by faceless thousands before you, the basic human rights that we all take for granted almost every day, eff you. If you can't take 60 seconds out of your day, while you wait in line for your double nonfat soy latte, to remember how lucky you are, may the barista piss in your spill proof travel mug.

For those that care in the slightest, and I hope there's at least a small handful of you, here's some history and protocol for the Stars and Stripes....my tribute to a long forgotten day (Flag Day, remember?) that celebrates the symbol of our freedom and the blood and sacrifice of our predecessors.

Flag Day, is a day for all Americans to celebrate and show respect for our flag, its designers and makers. Our flag is representative of our independence and our unity as a nation.....one nation, under God, indivisible. Our flag has a proud and glorious history. It was at the lead of every battle fought by Americans. Many people have died protecting it. It even stands proudly on the surface of the moon.

As Americans, we have every right to be proud of our culture, our nation, and our flag. So raise the flag today and every day with pride!

Properly Display Our Flag

There is a right way and a wrong way to display the flag. The American flag should be held in the highest of regards. It represents our nation and the many people who gave their lives for our country and our flag. Here are the basics on displaying the American flag:

The flag is normally flown from sunrise to sunset.
In the morning, raise the flag briskly. At sunset, lower it slowly. Always, raise and lower it ceremoniously.
The flag should not be flown at night without a light on it.
The flag should not be flown in the rain or inclement weather.
After a tragedy or death, the flag is flown at half staff for 30 days. It's called "half staff" on land ,and "half mast" on a ship.
When flown vertically on a pole, the stars and blue field , or "union", is at the top and at the end of the pole (away from your house).
The American flag is always flown at the top of the pole. Your state flag and other flags fly below it.
The union is always on top. When displayed in print, the stars and blue field are always on the left.
Never let your flag touch the ground, never...period.
Fold your flag when storing. Don't just stuff it in a drawer or box.
When your flag is old and has seen better days, it is time to retire it. Old flags should be burned or buried. Please do not throw it in the trash.

QotD: Just Can't Get Enough

I'm new to this whole blog thing. In fact, this is my very first post. It seems to me that the best bloggers are honest--often to the point that would offend some. So, here's some honesty (albeit incognito) for you all: I'm about to admit to something that I'd never admit in my real, non-blog life. And, I'm not comfortable enough with blogging yet to post actual pictures of myself or give away any identifying things about me. So, under a cloak of anonymity, here goes:

I'm addicted to ecstacy. X. XTC. Rolling. Not physically, at least I don't think so. I'm too rational and mundane to believe it a physical addiciton if I have the ability to consciously limit myself to only one ecstacy "episode" every 6-8 weeks or more. Or, perhaps that does qualify it as a physical addiction, because I want to do it more often. I don't because I care too much about my body, my self and the potential dangers (which can be argued in some other forum....) What I am addicted to is the incredible feeling and heightened sexuality ecstacy brings. If you've done it, you know. If not, you don't.

Until a few years ago, I didn't know. I thought it was a kid's drug that only ravers and younger people did. I'm not so young. I don't consider myself old, but I'm certainly not your stereotypical ecstacy taker. I've got a great, but stuffy job. I make a great living, work out 7 days a week and recently ran a marathon in under 4 hours. If anyone in my life thought I did ecstacy, they would laugh in disbelief.

Anyway, I don't usually club, as most 'droppers' do. I like to take ecstacy and channel the energy into a night of lovemaking with a trusted partner. I've never done it in public. I've heard it said that the physical effects make it difficult for men to have sex, but its an exceptional aphrodisiac for women. I haven't found it to ever be a deterrent for me! Actually, its been quite the opposite. While I consider myself a generous and conscientious lover (no woman has ever complained....I tend to care more about her pleasure than my own), ecstacy allows me to break down physchological barriers that otherwise could exist, depending on your partner of course. The feeling is absolutely incredible. If taken in the proper dosing, one is absolutely lucid and capable of rational thought. I find myself wanting to express the emotions of love and desire in a physical manner that only ecstacy takers are aware of. It is almost indescribable.

I am not advocating drugs in any way. This is not for everyone. Society is too irresponsible to allow drugs like this to be legal. Inevitably, there would be abuse, and health/dependency issues. Ecstacy was legal and used for psychiatric purposes until the 1970's. I might argue that alcohol, a legal mind alterer, is far more devastating and addictive. From the point of view of this usually responsible and trusted member of society, its one of nature's greatest thrill rides.

I don't know if I'd be so bold as to suggest ecstacy on an initial sexual encounter, but then again, why not? So, any other not-so-typical ecstacy fans/addicts out there???
